Auroras, and Noctilucales, and Oxygen
Frank Olsen captured a magical shot on October 7, 2012. There’s two phenomena in this shot, both produced via oxygen. The aurora borealis is produced by energy from the sun exciting (and eventually being released by) oxygen in the atmosphere. The blue glow at the shoreline is from bioluminescent organisms, using oxygen to produce light using an enzyme called luciferase.
